Today Is My 30th Birthday And The Start Of A New Era
Posted on 7:40 pm, Monday, 11 February, 2008 by Scotty StevensIt may sound pretentious to you when I say, "The start of a new era", that I actually mean for YOU as well as for me.
But sadly, such is how a confident outlook is labelled, today, in this altruistic/mystic-dominated society we live in. Far from being seen a virtue befitting heroes, the masses would have confidence cowering in a corner in fear of their own manufactured replacement: humility, often seen holding hands with 'selflessness'.
But enough about that.
While my opening act, there, has been a short indictment against the kind of evil that, with the undertaking of this project, I pledge to fight against - that is not the point of my inaugural post.
Rather, with today's launch of this project - on such an auspicious occasion (my 30th birthday), my aim is to briefly explain myself, this site, and, ultimately, our purpose.
For some 8 years, my financial goal was to become a millionaire by my 30th birthday. I'm not a millionaire. Far from it. In fact, I have friends far younger than me already ensconced in burgeoning careers, earning more money than I am right now.
That was not part of the plan. No, the plan was to be a millionaire by now, driving fast cars, living the playboy lifestyle with a fame that opened doors for me, fluffed my cushions and served me champagne for breakfast. And that is still my goal, albeit a bit further forward in the calendar…
You see, my problem up until now has been the having a desire and enthusiasm that far exceeds the discipline and patience to see it through. That, and one of those things they neglect to tell you about in our state-run schools: purpose.
Now THAT is what today is about. My purpose.
So let me start by answering a question you've no doubt had brewing: "Why 'Self Development For The Selfish'?" Because that is whom this site is for: the selfish. NOT the selfless. The selfless are the cause of destruction in this world and, potentially, the extinction of our race. The selfish are the reason for all that it brilliant. But I think we need to check the dictionary here to illustrate what I mean.
If you look-up the word, 'Selfish' in the dictionary. Here is what it does NOT say (adjective):
"Devoted only to the happiness of oneself at the expense of others' gain and happiness. Especially, the enjoyment of the act of helping oneself at the detriment of those in need."
Here is how 'Selfish' is actually defined (adjective):
"Devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others." A translation is required, here.
If one doesn't care for oneself, one doesn't exist. Humans are a self-sustaining race; we are not plants that await rainfall for food, the passing of a bee or blowing of the wind to procreate. We live by caring for, primarily, ourselves. Were we to care for others before ourselves, we would quickly become a burden to them, since we would be awaiting being cared-for ourselves. Eventually, we'd all die.
The man who chooses to put himself first, that places his mind over that of anyone else's, will lead others to freedom. The man who places his body (his vehicle) over that of anyone else's can live to fight another day. The man who places his emotions over those of anyone else's can teach those that want to learn. The man who places his soul over that of anyone else's will enjoy his life.
I am that man. Or at least I have chosen to become that man. Have you?
The conclusion is, in essence, that by virtue of our choosing to get out of bed and feed ourselves each day, we are putting ourselves first. Therefore, everyone is selfish. And the degree of one's selfishness is the level of their self worth. And the level of their self worth is the measure of their capacity for happiness. And happiness, surely, is the goal that gets people out of bed in the morning.
If you understand that, you understand the basis of the philosophy you will see showcased on this site. You'll realise my integrity, pride for who I am AND what I am (human), and with it, you'll grasp my true identity as a 'humanpreneur', defined as:
1. One who celebrates his being human, respects its potential, a logician, who disregards the supernatural - living only by the objectively proven, and who validates his existence with the choosing and undertaking of a purpose designed to grow himself mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically, with the exercising of his brilliance, thereby enjoying his life in the pursual of a happiness not experienced by other life forms on this earth. 2. One who fights for the freedom of human beings, and who preaches that this is the key to the survival of the human race, its advancement, and, hence, continuation into further generations.
If you've read any Ayn Rand, you've probably guessed by now that I am a proponent of her philosophy, objectivism. Ayn called it a 'philosophy for living on earth'. I have only just found her work, and am excited by how it correlates with my own philosophy. At this early stage of my reading of her work, I can't say how congruent my own philosophy will be with Ayn's, but I hope you find what I have to say appealing. It would be nice to know that I am not alone, here.
Today is my 30th birthday. Today is the start of my new life.
Today is the start of a new era.
To freedom,
Scotty Stevens
